| Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award | |
![]() The prestigious Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, given annually since 1970 is a unique award to the NFL due to being the only award that recognizes a player for his community service as in addition to on-field excellence. Recent winners have included Kurt Warner, Jason Taylor, Drew Brees, Peyton Manning, and LaDanian Tomlinson. This year’s Chargers nomination belongs to the one and only Quentin Jammer for his stellar performance on the field for the San Diego Chargers and his philanthropic efforts through his non-profit organization, The Jammer Family Foundation. The Jammer Family Foundation was formed in 2007 by Quentin and Alicia Jammer to empower disadvantaged youth in San Diego, and to provide much needed support to encourage and develop educational and professional potential. The Jammer’s mission is to be a positive force in the community in San Diego and aid programs that teach students the importance of education and fortitude. They concede that each child deserves equal opportunities in education and athletics. The Jammer’s also understand how influential negative distractions can be. They infer that a disparaged child is not a lost cause and with a positive support system, they can achieve. This year the Jammer Family Foundation has hosted many events including the honoring of local middle school student at Standley Middle School for their involvement in MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). Other charitable events include a celebrity bowling tournament and the hosting of Thanksgiving and Christmas 'Wish List' program. The Jammer Family Foundation is associated with the San Pasqual Academy, which is a four-year residential high school for foster teens and it is the first of its kind in the nation. Jammer is elated about the nomination for this esteemed award. “It means a lot to me as a player to be a part of something with such a rich history. To be nominated by the Chargers the second straight year is a true honor”, stated Jammer. Through the foundation, Quentin Jammer not only supports the academy financially, he is also very giving of his time and is extremely thankful for the nomination. |
